At Metrocentre, we use the unique and highly successful “Owen Three-Layer Closure Technique” in our reversal procedures.
We are one of the very few clinics in the world to use this closure technique, pioneered, perfected and successfully micro - surgically performed since 1971 by Prof Owen and in conjunction with Dr Chris Lekich and his team, located in his dedicated and specifically designed practice in Brisbane. This proven technique has been used in nearly 6000 microsurgical vasectomy reversal procedures.
How Does it Work?
The Owen Three-Layer Closure Technique is the only technique that uses three layers of sutures to re- join the two ends of the vas tube. The vas tube has three layers, inner intima, middle muscular layer that propels the sperm, and an outer advential layel. At around the width of two hairs, the vas tube bore (or lumen) that transports the sperm must be aligned accurately and meticulously to allow sperm to flow again and to minimise the risk of subsequent fibrosis/scarring and closure
The procedure is performed under a high power Zeiss operating microscope with a Xenon light source and takes on average 2-3 hours to perform. Anastomosis (or re-joining of the affected tubes) on both sides of the scrotum are always attempted.
The Owen Three-Layer Closure Technique used by Dr Lekich during
micro – surgical vasectomy reversals appears to offer:
- A stronger anastomosis (join) of the vas tube, enabling the successful passage of sperm. In fact there is no tension on the anastomosis site due to the important supporting sutures.
- A precise unique three-layer alignment to maintain the passage of sperm and minimise unwanted scarring to optimise the ongoing passage of sperm.
